Glass Buying Guide

Glass is sold by some builders’ mer¬chants and also by some do-it-yourself and hardware shops. But the main place to buy glass is from glass merchants sometimes known as glaziers if they offer an installation service as well as selling glass.

Compared with other types of shop, glass merchants are cheaper – though prices still vary from one to another-and have a much wider range of types of glass in stock. In addition, they offer a number of helpful services:

• advice on the types and sizes of glass to use for different jobs. In general, this advice is likely to be sound
• cutting glass to your dimensions without charge. It is essential that you give correct dimensions – cutting thin slivers off a pane is not easy and, of course, there is not much you can do with a pane that is too small
• edge working by smoothing rough edges or giving edges a polished effect. They usually charge for this and for shap¬ing or bevelling the edges of a piece of glass. Sometimes, you may want a hole cut in a pane – for an extractor fan, say – and a glass merchant can do this for you, too. This may be free if you’re buy¬ing the glass at the same time
• delivering glass in specially designed vans which protect the glass in transit. The amount glass merchants charge for this depends on the distance they have to come and the size of the order. If you live fairly close and are buying a reasonable quantity, delivery will probably be free
• disposal of broken glass. One of the problems of replacing a broken window is getting rid of the broken glass. Some glass merchants will take this for you -they sell it back to the glass manufac¬turers since broken glass (known as cut¬let) is an important ingredient in the glass-making process.

Buying glass from a glass merchant can be a strange experience. Although many have a ’shop’ where different types of glass are on display and where you give your order, some are large warehouses full of glass where you have to find some¬one who might serve you. It is probably best not to take small children when shopping for glass.
